Politecnico di Milano, Italy

James Harris is the Director of Science and Technology and a Research Fellow at Presidio Medical, a clinical stage startup that has developed a seconds-long, ultra low frequency (ULF) electrical pulse to treat chronic pain. Dr. Harris received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University based on his research of novel materials and the brain’s response to intracortical electrodes. He completed post-doctoral training in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania where he investigated the sequelae of traumatic brain injury in large animals and tissue engineering approaches to treat Parkinsons’ disease. Additionally, he served as a consultant to DARPA in peripheral nerve technologies where he advised on investments and project management of advanced neural therapies. In his current role at Presidio, Dr. Harris oversees all internal and external preclinical efforts to understand the safety and efficacy of the novel seconds-long ULF technology. A large effort has been understanding the electrochemistry of the novel material and electrode being used for ULF spinal cord stimulation (SCS). These efforts have resulted in the Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval of a novel electrode material for SCS. Dr. Harris and Presidio continue to develop the technology for chronic pain and other indications.
